Architecture! The church replaced St. Peter's Church, which was destroyed by fire on August 14, 1896. King Leopold II had great plans for Ostend and would have liked the demolition of this dean church. But he met resistance from the dean. Some people from the Bruges bourgeoisie spread the rumor that the king would know more about the fire. The fact is that after months of investigation, the public prosecutor could not find a perpetrator. But the prestigious church could now be built.
The new church was built in neo-Gothic style between 1899 and 1905 according to the detailed plans of the Bruges city architect Louis Delacenserie (1838-1909). At first he had refused that assignment due to lack of time, but, under pressure from Leopold II, he nevertheless accepted the assignment. The style of the church is mirrored in the Gothic style of Cologne Cathedral, but also in the neo-Gothic Votive Church in Vienna by djietie on 30.10.2020 | #art #kunst #artspots
