The fact is that after months of investigation, the public prosecutor could not find a perpetrator. But the prestigious church could now be built. The new church was built in neo-Gothic style between 1899 and 1905 according to the detailed plans of the Bruges city architect Louis Delacenserie (1838-1909). At first he had refused that assignment due to lack of time, but, under pressure from Leopold II, he nevertheless accepted the assignment.
