I am currently working on a research project about my uncle, Gilbert Shelton and his legacy in the world of Underground comix. A few years ago I noticed a Freak Brothers book on Invader’s bookshelf when he appears in Banksy’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” film, and after a stroke of luck I managed to get in touch with him. When I visited with Gilbert in Paris last December I arranged for the two to meet, as Invader has been a fan of his for many years. One of the coolest experiences of my life. The character that Invader is holding up is named “Poddy Passumquoddy” and was Gilbert’s earliest character that he created as a teen in Texas during the 1950’s. Gilbert would graffiti him around town with the tag “Poddy Rules the World!” and I’ve since resurrected the campaign. If anyone is interested in my project about Gilbert, feel free to check out the “Gilbert Shelton Comix” page I manage on FB. Or check out @PoddyRulesTheWorld on IG. [link] [comments] |
